According to Meteo France Reunion, Enawo, class 4 cyclone, has hit Madagascar. The winds blow at more than 250km/h – with gusts up to 290km/h. This is the worse cyclone to hit Madagascar in more than a decade.

As you can see on this map the prediction are that the cyclone is going to go right down through the country. The good news with that is that the winds will get less strong. The cyclone needs the water and the warm temperature to get stronger. However what it means, is probably lots of floods. Madagascar is a very poor country, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this triggers a call of International Aid.

This is a satellite picture of the cyclone hitting the island and should reach the capital Antananarivo Wednesday during the day.
The kids said a small prayer in the car on the way to school this morning, but that is unfortunately not enough.
I was talking to a friend and we were discussing the morbid fascination that some persons have. Seriously, people here, are wanting a cyclone to come – all for weird reasons: the lazy ones want a day of work or the expats who want to try something exotic – of course they are all sitting in their brick houses and strong roofs, with insurances to pay in case of trouble… It must be nice to live and being so oblivious to what happens around you.
If you are interested on twitter there are lots of posts including videos from Madagascar, shortcut here.

Hi! Hope you are enjoying my travel blog about Mauritius! I am a Danish Expat, mum of 2. Currently we live in Mauritius and we absolutely love it. I am taking you around this beautiful island and also other travels we enjoy!

  1. Hope it doesn’t hit Mauritius 😦 Stay safe!

    1. Thanks, but no we are safe from this one, just bad weather. I think the cyclones can go from east to west and north to south as a general idea. It wouldn’t go all the way to Madagascar and then turn back, if that makes sense. But there is another storm forming. They are coming late this year… cyclone season should almost be over.
