Yesterday was Ferney trail’s 10th anniversary – and we spend a fabulous family day. The kids loved the run at the bottom of the mountains and in the sugar cane fields. Mummy here enjoyed to get to introduce such an amazing activity to her kids. Nothing better really than just running in nature and the scenery was just so beautiful. 4km is such a good distance to start with for children. Kiddos 1 loves nature but needed a bit of coaching on the way! Kiddos 2 on the other hand was half sprinting through, absolutely loving every minute of it and wants me to sign him up for the next one!

Ferney Trail - La Vallée de Ferney - Nature Reserve Mauritius

View of the Ferney Valley

What is the Ferney Trail?

It is the Mauritian trail with the largest number of participants, last years edition had  2’600 participants, over 4 different trails: the 4km kid’s race, always sponsored by Sun Kids – the amazing kids club for Sun resorts (Long Beach, Sugar Beach and La Pirogue Hotels), the 10km race, 20km and finally 50km race.

It is also a non-profit event. This year CIEL Ferney trail supported Inclusion Mauritius, a network of NGO’s working for persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Beyond the running, it is a great day that is organised with lots of different activities: concerts and DJs, a huge kids corner with jumping castles, games and foods for the little ones (a drop off for parents so they can run the trail and a place where even bigger kids can come after the trail). Lunch and drinks are provided – but there are also stalls selling other types of food, animations by all the other sponsors…

La Vallée de Ferney is located in the south eastern part of Mauritius. I had already mentioned the trail in my post about the great day we spend at Domaine de l’Etoile (the biggest nature reserve in Mauritius, where you can go on quads and have fun on zip-lines) – La Vallée de Ferney is literally on the other side of the mountain and the 2 nature reserves are located one next to another.

The trail conditions are great: the Ferney Trail always takes place in September (except last year where it had to be postponed because of an animal sickness outbreak), so the days are still on the cooler side. The humidity is low compared to the summer months and temperature rarely exceeds 26 degrees celsius. The 50km race is the first to start when dawn breaks at 5:30am – and the 4km fun race is last one to start at 9:30am. As you can see on the pictures we had really nice weather, a bit of sun and some clouds.

“Bouze Moris”: Move Mauritius! – CIEL Ferney Trail 2017

La Vallée de Ferney

The Valley in which the trail took place is a 200 hectare nature reserve that aims to preserve the native forests of Mauritius and its unique biodiversity. There are lots of different activities there, as bird watching – you can admire the beautiful Kestrel, the Mauritian Falcon, a small coffee museum, the gardens with the coffee plantation, a nursery used to grow endemic trees and the Ferney Cruise – I need to try that! Have a look at their website  La Vallée de Ferney, to see how you can spend the day there.

Other Trails in Mauritius

There are a few trails in Mauritius during the year and they are becoming more and more popular – which is great. The next large one up is Moka trail on 7 October 2017. If you are looking for more information of trails in Mauritius, is the website to visit.

The trail takes place every year and is open to residents as well as non residents. This is a great activity to do even when you are on holidays! The prices start at Rs500 for residents and 30Euros for non residents. Registration starts a few months before the trail and closes around 2-3 weeks before D-date. You can find all the information on the CIEL Ferney trail on their website:

CIEL Ferney Trail, Mauritius - Biggest trail in Mauritius

Posted by Julz

Hi! Hope you are enjoying my travel blog about Mauritius! I am a Danish Expat, mum of 2. Currently we live in Mauritius and we absolutely love it. I am taking you around this beautiful island and also other travels we enjoy!

  1. Nice way to make awareness to this cause and in the meantime you get a work out out of it 😉 Looks like a nice trail.

  2. This really seems like such a lovely day out! Celebrations and nature, a great combination 🙂

  3. Ferney Trails looks like an ideal recipe for a great outdoors experience. Especially for kids and the family. 4 Kms probably is an ideal distance for the kids, just enough to challenge them and not so much that they get tired or fatigued.
