41 years and still going strong, a very much liked resort on the island, La Pirogue, part of Sun Resorts, is a very appealing and famous 4* resort on the west coast of Mauritius. The hotel is located in Flic-en-Flac, an hour’s drive from the airport and 40min from Port Louis, the capital.
The hotel recently reopened after a renovation of the rooms and some of the public areas. The hotel has 248 rooms and they are all on the ground floor (something rather unusual). Every room is in a lovely detached or semi-detached hatched roof bungalow and the style of the rooms is now Boho Chic – a cute Bohemian and colourful, yet elegant theme.
All the rooms have a small private patio and overlook an amazing coconut grove – some with the Indian Ocean in the background, others with a closer access to the beach.
Their Garden Bungalows are not very big, 25m2, but the rooms have a lovely feel to them and the bathrooms have been completely renovated. Rooms go from Garden Bungalows to Senior Suites, those are much larger at 78m2. Their bathroom amenities are signed ‘La Pirogue’, they are actually really nice with a lovely coconut fragrance – a real island fragrance. Other room amenities include a minibar, tea and coffee facilities, safety box and a 42inch flat screen.
They have 6 restaurants and bar outlets to choose from. Their main restaurant is The Wolmar, where they serve buffet breakfast and a different themed buffet in the evening. Once a week they do Mauritian buffet with BBQ in the gardens. Other restaurants are Van Der Stel Wine Bar, The Medine Bar, Le Morne Beach Bar, Magenta Seafood Restaurant and the Coconut Café. Guests from La Pirogue also have access to the restaurants located at the sister hotel, The Sugar Beach.

La Pirogue Hotel’s activities
Water activities: The Pirogue Resort has a large diving centre with more than a dozen dive sites not far. They organise big game fishing, visits to the dolphins or day trips to l’Ile au Benitier – one of the small satellite islands. There are also many free activities as glass bottom boat, paddling board, windsurfing or aqua gym, just to name a few.
Sun Kids Club is an amazing place for the kids (from 3 to 12yrs) to hang out – open most day there is a beautiful outdoor play area as well as inside. Kids can have lunch and enjoy great age-appropriate activities. There is also a Teen Club (12 to 17yrs) and great outdoor activities like mini golf, giant chess and a beach volley pitch.
The Spa is located at the sister hotel, The Sugar Beach, within walking distance through the gardens. It is operated by Cinq Mōndes Paris. Now I haven’t tried this one, but they have just taken over the management of the spa at the Long Beach (a Sun Resort located on the East Coast, that I have already mentioned on my blog) and it is fabulous!
A large gym offers a full range of cardio equipment, free weights and body building. They also have a martial arts area. Daily yoga, pilates and aerobic classes are also available.
Like all Sun Resorts, you have free green time at the famous golf by Bernhard Langer on l’Ile aux Cerfs. It is a bit far away though and would be a daily excursion from Flic-en-Flac. You can however join it with a visit of the small island on the east coast and spend the rest of the day at the beach. We went to spend the day, not long ago – you can read about it here. La Pirogue also has preferential green fees with the Tamarina Golf nearby.
The Pool is located just off the beach and though not very big has a nice design and is very inviting. There is a small slide that the kids absolutely loved, a jacuzzi and also a life guard on duty as of 9am.
And then of course there is the beach! A beautiful, as-long-as-the-eye-can-see stretch of white sand. The pictures speak of themselves when it comes to how gorgeous it is. Back drop with a view of the Morne Brabant, the Unesco Word Heritage site, the absolutely iconic view of the rock where slaves would hide back in the early 19th century before slavery was abolished in Mauritius.
Unfortunately the evening we were there the sun stayed put behind the clouds, and not even a tiny red light came through to take a picture to go with the awesome little VIP cocktail amenity sent to me as sundowner. I just love these ‘mix-them-yourself’ cocktails.
A welcome drink and a smooth arrival in the lobby, followed by a small buggy drive to our room, which was ready upon arrival at 2pm. We had fruits, chocolates and candy waiting for us in the room. We had a Garden View Bungalow – even though the view is not straight on the beach, it is still really nice and would be the perfect place to hang out for drinks in your room for sunset.
I had a drink at the Beach Bar while the kids were playing mini golf. It was unfortunately very windy and coldish (we were still in winter, so the weather very changing – and cold for a local…) but I got 5 minutes for myself which is always enjoyable when I stay somewhere alone with the kids.
In the evening we had dinner at the main restaurant: there was a Mediterranean buffet. The kids always enjoy a buffet – it does make things easier I think! They have live cooking stations and the restaurant is very well appointed for a buffet, with lots of space and even though the hotel was full, it did not feel overly busy.
We had an event at the Sugar Beach so did not stay for the evening entertainment, but we saw dancers getting ready. Usually most hotels have performers every night – either Sega dancers or singers etc.
Next morning luckily we woke up to glorious weather – the sun was shining, the wind had disappeared. I took a long stroll on the beach and enjoyed the sunshine. The breakfast staff was really welcoming and greeted us with a big smile. The buffet was full of the usual yummies: pancakes and waffles, fresh juice, local jams or a live station where they make your eggs as you want them.
The kids enjoyed some more swimming, ran around in the coconut gardens and had so much fun – they were sad when it was time to leave again. An easy and quick check out.
You can book your room directly with the hotel via their website: La Pirogue Resort.
